Although we buy and sell a variety of gold coins the most popular ones we deal with are the British Sovereigns, South African Krugerrands and the Canadian Maple Leaf.

Some general facts about Sovereigns & Krugerrands and the Maple Leaf

Sovereign (Great Britain)

  • The sovereign was a real circulating coin until the outbreak of the First World War
  • During this time most countries either stopped or reduced the production of gold coins for circulation
  • In 1933 almost every country in the world stopped gold coin production. Production was not resumed until the early 1960s

Krugerrands (South Africa)

  • The birth of the Krugerrand in 1967 came about as a result of an idea from the South African Chamber of Mines; to help market and sell South African gold at a lower premium over the gold value
  • Production has taken place every year since 1967
  • Originally only one size was minted - containing one troy ounce (31.10 gms)
  • In 1980, three other sizes were introduced; half, quarter and a tenth of an ounce

Maple Leaf (Canada)

  • First minted in 1979 by Royal Canadian Mint
  • The basic design of the Maple Leaf coin has remained unchanged since it was first introduced
  • It is the purest gold coin of regular issue in the world
  • It contains no base metals at all and is .999 purity
  • The gold used in the coins come only from Canadian gold mines
  • It is available in 5 different sizes
